Friso's Pilgrim

Friso's Pilgrim Friso's Pilgrim

By owner Alison Harman in WA, written in 2003

I bought him as a newly backed 3 year old and have had him for 2.5 years now. He is a very experimental horse and plays with anything he can get his teeth on. If I go into his paddock to rake, for instance, in two mins he is there taking the rake out of my hands and trying to fling it into the air. No rugs can be left anywhere near him in the stable as they will all end up either in a heap on the floor or inside his stable, even sometimes taken out into the walk-out bit, and trampled. The kids who keep their horses with him have given him a bell which he rings for room service. He adores all attention and likes best to stand about surrounded by several people all talking about or grooming him. Therefore he loves being plaited up or even having his mane pulled. His attention-seeking and adoration-loving nature, coupled with his good looks, make him quite a favourite.

He is very nice to ride. He suits collected work and seems to enjoy it a lot. I have not hurried him and let him choose the pace we work at. We still do not do a lot of canter work as he is not quite strong enough for that yet. As a reward for that approach, I am now getting a really nice upward-springing canter from him. He can do shoulder-in and half pass at trot and started at canter. He is only 5 so I am happy with that. I think he will be really great in the future for the collected work which is what I like to do best.
